About me & photography

Welcome and thanks for visiting my site and home for part of my creativity. I was born in the Philippines and moved to California (1973) when I was 7 years old. I studied Graphic Design in college but kept sneaking into photo classes. I make a living with Graphic Design freelancing in San Francisco since 1992. But my main interest is photography and would like to share my passion with anyone who appreciates it.

I remember when I was 6 years old spending time with my father in the darkroom. I was fascinated with pictures appearing out of what seemed like plain water. It was a miracle I thought! I began learning how to use a camera with my father’s old Voigtländer. It was a bit frustrating at first because it was one of those ‘range-finder’ cameras – so you had to think alot. Often I would just end up with one good exposure from a whole roll of film.

While I was taking photo classes in high school (early 80's), I decided I wanted a Single Lens Reflex camera - an SLR they call it. I envied my classmates who had one. So on my sophomore year, I worked at Burger King part-time so I could buy my own camera. I saved up enough money to buy my first SLR – the Pentax ME Super. Since then I‘ve been more excited about photography.

Currently I use a DSLR with a prime lens. A camera with more sensitivity to light. I like the visual connection I get using the viewfinder. Other times I would use my ultra-compact digital camera, the Sony W55 & T7 but find it awkward relying on the display to compose instead of the viewfinder.

There's lot of compromises to make with different cameras. I'm finding a small camera is easier and quicker and has the advantage of being inconspicous. But with a DSLR the image quality makes it worth lugging a bigger camera around. Also I find that I think and take a closer look of what I'm photographing with a DSLR.

I miss the imperfection of film but I hope to learn to create digital images that have the warmth and softness of film.

Creating and changing this site is a big and continually exciting (and time consuming) project for me. Thanks for all the support from family & friends otherwise this site wouldn't exist. I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoy creating them.
